  Nidec-Shimpo Corporation “Nidec-Shimpo”) announced today that is has newly added direct-current (DC), 24V modules to its product lineup of drive modules for automated guided vehicles (“AGVs”) and autonomous mobile robots (“AMRs”) currently on sale.  As demand increases for automated and labor-saving warehouses in logistics, manufacturing, and other industries, the AGV and AMR businessis growing continuously, with the scale of its market forecast to grow from US$3 billion in 2021 to more than US$18 billion in 2027.  The newly launched 24V drive modules, which are additions to the lineup of existing DC, 48V products, can be used with the same voltage (DC 24V) used for many peripheral devices. At the drive sections of these new modules are the compact and low-noise reducers, which are Nidec-Shimpo’s specialty and apply the technology for helical gears, with two allowable load capacities of 250kgf and 650kgf. Each driver of the products can control two dual-axis motors, is 60% the size of their predecessors, and thus contribute to the creation of smaller and lighter AGV & AMR units. For the interface with an upper controller, the newly launched modules have in them the CAN (Controller Area Network) communication function in addition to RS-422, another communication function used frequently for factory automation equipment.   Due to the diversity of lifestyles, current products are expected to have high accessibility and advanced system control for various users and environments. This results in the need for a high-performance CPU and a sensor system capable of detecting various materials.  There are many applications that use inexpensive sensors (photosensors), as well as expensive sensors (piezoelectric sensors and ultrasonic sensors) to detect material. Photosensors are easy to use and can be installed in various places in the equipment. However, accumulation and adhesion of dust can cause erroneous detection and deterioration. In addition, it can complicate the assembly due to the routing of data lines and power lines.  The capacitive sensor embedded in the RL78/G22 can perform detection without direct contact, making it possible to create a system that is less susceptible to dust, etc., and solve problems with sensors depending on the usage environment. Furthermore, with the sensor built into the MCU, a system can be constructed using only electrodes.  A capacitive sensor measures the amount of charge generated between an electrode and material. Since the amount of electric charge changes in ratio to the dielectric constant of material, it is generally affected by material with a higher dielectric constant than the dielectric constant of air. Therefore, it can detect various objects such as human body, water, oil, glass, plastic, paper, and metal.  The RL78/G22 Fast Prototyping Board (FPB) makes evaluating microcontrollers and has touch button/touch slider electrodes that can be used to easily evaluate capacitive sensors too.  The following demonstration shows how to use the touch button electrode in the FPB to detect material (water, powder – chalk).   Murata has broadened its portfolio of chip ferrite beads with the introduction of the BLM15PX_SH1 and BLM15PX_BH1 series. Supplied in a 1005 mm (0402 inch) size, these compact and rugged units are highly optimised for automobile deployment. They present engineers with the industry’s first power supply line noise suppression components in this size format. Current rated versions of 900 mA to 3000 mA are available, with impedance figures at 100 MHz of 33 Ohms to 600 Ohms being covered.  With mechanical systems inside vehicles being replaced by electronic ones, plus increasing levels of data acquisition being witnessed, suppression of electro-magnetic interference (EMI) noise emanating from power supply lines is recognised as a vital element of modern automobile design. The number of sensors and cameras being incorporated into vehicles is increasing dramatically, in order to support ADAS and eventually autonomous driving, and the integrity of the data captured by these devices needs to be maintained while it is transported to and from the relevant ECUs.  The inherent robustness of Murata’s AEC-Q200 qualified BLM15PX_SH1 and BLM15PX_BH1 series make these chip ferrite beads highly suitable for use in uncompromising automotive environments. The low DC resistance characteristics of these components (down to 0.022 Ohms Max.) helps to mitigate the power losses experienced and keeps associated heat generation to a minimum. The BLM15PX_SH1 series supports an operational temperature range of ?55°C to +125°C with the BLM15PX_BH1 series supporting an even greater range of ?55°C to +150°C.  “Engineers need to ensure that high degrees of noise control have been implemented, so that in-vehicle infotainment and driver assistance functions will not be impacted,” states Tomohiro Yao, EMI Division, General Manager of Marketing & Promotion Department, at Murata. “The BLM15PX_SH1 and BLM15PX_BH1 series set new benchmarks when it comes to noise suppression, delivering performance capabilities that would normally only be possible with much larger components.”

  Nordic Semiconductor is adding three new product variants to its nPM1100 power management IC product range. Until now, the range has only been available in an ultra-compact 2.1-by-2.1mm chip-scale package (CSP) form factor.  The first new variant comes in a more mainstream 4-by-4mm QFN component package. CSPs are an absolute requirement for products defined by extreme size constraints. However, when this is not a factor, QFNs allow for easier and cheaper manufacturing as well as simplified design, development, and verification. QFNs also offer greater thermal and vibration robustness compared to CSPs.  The second and third new nPM1100 variants support higher maximum (termination) battery charging voltages (VTERM) that are required to fully charge certain types of lithium-ion cells commonly used in portable wireless products. These variants will also be offered in either a CSP or QFN package.  Termination voltage is the maximum voltage a battery should reach during charging. It is used by the battery charger circuit to switch from constant current charging to constant voltage charging and is ultimately used to determine when a battery is fully charged, and so when to stop charging.  All Nordic nPM1100 variants require no configuration software to operate as all settings are pin configurable.  “Chip-scale packages are amazing in their miniaturization,” said Geir Kjosavik, Product Director PMIC at Nordic Semiconductor. “In its smallest CSP configuration, the nPM1100 solution only takes up 23mm2 of board space including passive components. However, the product’s ultra-high power management efficiency and ease-of-use bring tremendous value to battery-powered applications where space constraints are not so strict, and so the use of a QFN package is often preferable.”  Kjosavik said the previous nPM1100’s maximum termination voltage was below that of some increasingly popular lithium-ion batteries used in wearable products. The new nPM1100 variants with higher termination voltage will now maximize the application range and power optimization potential of Nordic’s power management ICs to all portable electronics products.  The all new nPM1100 product variants are in volume production and available to order now. A new version of the existing evaluation kit (nPM1100 EK) for evaluating the higher termination voltage will be available end of Q1 (nPM1100 EKHV).

Ameya<span style='color:red'>360</span>:Li-ion Battery Material Prices Drop in January Amid Slowing Growth in Chinese NEV Market
  There was an across-the-board decline in prices of upstream (raw) materials for lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries in January as participants in the industry chain in China were focusing on inventory consumption, according to TrendForce. The decline was especially significant for upstream materials related to cathodes, cathode materials, and battery electrolytes.  The average price of lithium carbonate, which is the most costly among the upstream materials related to cathodes, fell by 12% month-on-month (MoM). Lithium hydroxide also suffered a price drop, but the demand for this material was bolstered by orders from regions outside China. Compared with lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide experienced a more moderate price slide. Nevertheless, the average prices of battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide both dipped below Rmb500,000 per metric tons. Turning to electrolytes and related upstream materials, the average price of LiPF6 (lithium hexafluorophosphate) fell by 11% MoM for January. This, in turn, caused the average price of electrolytes to drop by 11~15% MoM for the same month.  TrendForce points out that China initiated the phase-out of its NEV (new energy vehicle) subsidy at the start of 2023. Other regions of the country have introduced other subsidy policies in the hope of stimulating consumption, and the preferential rate for the purchase tax on NEV purchase has been extended to the end of 2023.  However, a significant portion of Chinese consumers’ demand for new vehicles was expended in 4Q 2022 when the country saw energetic promotional activities that aimed to spur NEV sales. Moving into this first quarter, the Chinese car market has been affected by the low season. On the whole, NEV sales in China has slowed down recently and thereby caused a general decline in prices of upstream materials for Li-ion batteries. On the other hand, the drop in material prices has reduced some of the cost pressure on the manufacturing of Li-ion batteries.  Regarding price trends of NEV power battery products in China, prices of battery cells on the whole fell by about 1% MoM for January. Various cell types including ternary cells and prismatic LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells experienced a MoM decline of 1~2%. TrendForce projects that their prices will go down further in February.  In the market for energy storage battery cells, most products are LFP cells, and their prices fell by 2% MoM for January to reach the average of Rmb0.94 per watt-hour. Also, due to the policy support that the Chinese government has been providing for the development of energy storage technologies, the demand for Li-ion energy storage batteries is expected to rebound slightly going forward. Prices of energy storage battery cells are currently projected to remain mostly flat or drop a bit for 1Q23.  Lastly, looking at Li-ion battery cells for consumer electronics, the average price of LCO (lithium cobalt oxide) cells in China came to around Rmb9.9 per amp-hour in January. Transactions were low in the market for consumer batteries due to the slumping demand for electronic devices. Furthermore, prices of the upstream materials for LCO cathodes kept sliding.  Looking ahead, the market for LCO materials is expected to remain weak in the short term, it will witness a further price decline in February.
