SK Innovation announced it will create more than 2,000 jobs and invest $1.67 billion to build a new electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing plant in Georgia.

SK Innovation, which is part of SK Group, is making the investment to better compete in the growing global EV battery market. Customers for SK Innovation include Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai-Kia Motors, and this new investment will provide opportunities for SK Innovation to bring its world-class products to additional automakers in the United States.

“We are excited to bolster our presence in the United States by making this investment in Georgia,” said Jun Kim, CEO of SK Innovation. “SK Innovation is a worldwide leader in the energy industry and this latest investment will allow us to work with the growing automotive industry in the Southeastern United States, ensuring future partnerships for years to come.”

The new plant will be located in Jackson County, Georgia. Construction will occur in two phases, beginning in early 2019. The first phase will invest approximately $1 billion and employ more than 1,000 advanced manufacturing employees, making it the largest scale electric vehicle battery plant in the United States. SK Innovation leadership worked closely with federal, state and local officials to finalize the investment.

SK Group Chairman Says Abnormal Memory Prices Should Fall; AI Chip Demand Seen Up 60–100% Next Year
  The recent surge in memory prices has drawn comments from SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, who also chairs SK hynix, one of the biggest beneficiaries of the boom. According to ETNews, Chey, who also serves as chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), said current memory prices are abnormally high and warned that if prices remain elevated, PC and mobile device prices will continue to rise, with those higher costs ultimately weighing on consumer demand.  As noted by Maeil Business Newspaper, Chey said demand for AI semiconductors is expected to increase by 60% to 100% in 2027 from 2026, while the broader memory semiconductor market is also projected to grow by at least 50% to 60% over the same period. However, he noted that few companies are meaningfully expanding supply, meaning the supply-demand gap is likely to widen further. This suggests that while the AI investment boom is driving memory prices higher, it could ultimately place greater pressure on downstream industries.  He argued that rising prices are not a healthy sign for the market, adding that prices should fall because current levels are abnormal. He also warned that PC and mobile manufacturers cannot continue passing higher memory costs on to consumers. According to Reuters, Kwak said the global memory industry is heading for its worst-ever supply shortage in 2027, with memory demand expected to outpace production capacity well into the next decade despite aggressive capacity expansion.  Chey on AI Infrastructure and Long-Term Growth  Beyond the memory market, Chey also predicted that even if the current supply shortage is partially eased, AI-related bottlenecks will shift to other parts of the infrastructure stack. According to ETNews, Chey said electrical equipment for energy infrastructure is already in short supply, and as AI adoption accelerates, shortages could eventually extend to power cables and even the raw materials needed to manufacture data center cables.  Looking further ahead, Chey said the ongoing wave of AI infrastructure investment is expected to eventually lower the cost of generating AI tokens, as noted by ETNews. Once the industry enters a token economy in which AI is converted into productivity for real-world work and services, he believes a self-sustaining AI ecosystem will emerge.

SK Group Chairman Joins ADR Listing Event; Samsung Reportedly Seeks Big Tech Foundry Orders at Sun Valley
  SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is attending SK hynix’s American Depositary Receipt (ADR) listing ceremony on Nasdaq in New York on the morning of July 10 local time. According to ETNews, in addition to meeting with global investors, Chey is expected to hold discussions with major customers on expanding AI memory cooperation. The report also says he may meet with executives from leading tech companies, including NVIDIA and Tesla, during his U.S. visit.  As the report notes, Chey’s attendance at the event is seen as an effort to showcase SK hynix’s AI memory competitiveness and long-term growth potential to global investors. The report adds that the ADR listing was intended to help the company achieve a valuation in global capital markets that better reflects its role as a key enabler of AI infrastructure expansion.  The ADR offering is valued at approximately KRW 43 trillion and involves the issuance of up to 17.79 million new shares, representing about 2.5% of the company’s total outstanding shares. The report says the proceeds will be used to finance construction of the first fab at the Yongin semiconductor cluster, the Cheongju P&T7 advanced packaging fab, and the purchase of manufacturing equipment, including extreme ultraviolet (EUV) scanners.  Samsung Courts Big Tech at Sun Valley  Samsung executives are also in the U.S., where Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee has attended the Sun Valley Conference alongside Han Jin-man, President and Head of the Foundry Business. According to ZDNet, the move reflects Samsung’s push to secure AI semiconductor orders from major technology companies. Lee is accompanied this year by Han Jin-man, who was appointed head of Samsung’s foundry business late last year. The report says Han is expected to support discussions on securing foundry orders from major tech companies during the conference.  Against this backdrop, attention has turned to potential foundry customers. According to The Korea Herald, one of the most closely watched meetings is with Apple executives, including CEO Tim Cook, incoming CEO John Turnus, and Senior Vice President of Services Eddy Cue. The report says Samsung Foundry, which secured an order for iPhone image sensor chips last August, is aiming to join Apple’s application processor (AP) supply chain, currently served by TSMC.  Beyond Apple, The Korea Herald also notes that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are attending the conference. Both companies are developing in-house AI chips to compete with NVIDIA, already source High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) from Samsung Electronics, and are viewed as potential Samsung Foundry customers.

SK hynix Unveils KRW 100T Cheongju Investment, Including KRW 80T NAND Fab Set for 1H29 Operations
  SK hynix has unveiled a major new investment plan. According to ZDNet, President and CEO Kwak Noh-Jung announced at the National Briefing on the Vision for Advanced Industry Development in the Chungcheong Region on July 2 that the company will invest KRW 100 trillion in Cheongju. The plan allocates KRW 80 trillion to the M17 NAND fabrication plant and KRW 20 trillion to P&T7, SK hynix’s advanced packaging facility.  Construction of the new M17 fab is set to begin in 2027, with operations targeted to commence in the first half of 2029, according to Kwak. P&T7, meanwhile, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027 and will serve as SK hynix’s advanced packaging hub, the report adds.  Kwak said the growing adoption of agentic AI and physical AI is broadening NAND flash applications, making further capacity expansion necessary, the report notes.  The report further notes that SK Group plans to build a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI data center in the Chungcheong region to create synergies between semiconductor manufacturing and AI computing. The group had previously announced plans to establish 15 GW of AI data center capacity across South Korea.  Samsung Unveils KRW 140 Trillion Investment Plan  Meanwhile, Samsung also announced KRW 140 trillion in investments at the same event, Newsis reports. The investment plan includes KRW 67 trillion to expand Samsung Display’s advanced OLED production lines in Asan, KRW 56 trillion for Samsung Electronics’ HBM fabs in Onyang and Cheonan, KRW 9 trillion for Samsung SDI to build a next-generation battery mother line in Cheonan, and KRW 8 trillion for Samsung Electro-Mechanics to establish high-performance AI server package substrate production in Sejong.

SK hynix Reportedly Pulls Forward HBM4E Sample Timeline, Eyeing June–July Shipments to Key Customers
  Samsung announced the start of HBM4E sampling in late May and later unveiled an HBM5 mock-up for the first time at COMPUTEX 2026. Against this backdrop, rival SK hynix is also stepping up its next-generation HBM push, with South Korean media outlet Newsis reporting that the memory giant has secured positive results in HBM4E development and is nearing sample shipments to key customers. The company had previously guided that sampling would start in the second half of the year, suggesting the timeline is now being pulled forward, the report adds.  As Newsis notes, next-generation HBM is highly customized for customers, and earlier sample shipments enable faster performance validation and optimization—ultimately translating into a strategic edge in securing final mass production orders.  Beyond sampling timelines, broader supply and pricing dynamics are also shifting, which may give early movers key advantages. According to TrendForce, as the market enters 2Q26, negotiations between buyers and suppliers have shifted toward HBM4 supply agreements for 2027, which is expected to become the market’s mainstream project generation. The shift underscores how both Samsung and SK hynix are accelerating HBM4 and HBM4E development amid tightening market cycles.  SK hynix HBM4E Specs Under Spotlight  As highlighted by Newsis, SK hynix’s HBM4E is likely to be used in NVIDIA’s next-generation AI accelerator, Rubin Ultra, set for release next year. In line with this platform upgrade, TrendForce notes that NVIDIA’s Rubin Ultra is expected to further increase HBM capacity per GPU to 384GB.  Against this backdrop of rising system-level requirements, HBM4E specifications are also being pushed higher across the stack. According to Newsis, SK hynix’s HBM4E core die is expected to adopt a 1c DRAM process node, compared with the 1b node used in HBM4. In addition, The Chosun Daily previously reported that the company is likely to use TSMC’s 3nm process for its HBM4E logic die, aiming to challenge Samsung’s 4nm design.  On the competitive front, Samsung Electronics completed the world’s first shipment of HBM4E samples in late May, supplying them to NVIDIA, according to Yonhap News.  Samsung’s HBM4E combines a 1c DRAM core die with a 4nm foundry-based base die, delivering speeds of up to 14Gbps per pin and peaking at 16Gbps, equivalent to a maximum bandwidth of 4TB/s, the report notes.
