Alibaba sets new Singles Day record with more than $30.8 billion in sales in 24 hours
Giulia Marchi | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesMembers of the media sit in front of a large screen waiting for the live updates of sales figures to start for the Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s annual November 11 Singles' Day online shopping event in Shanghai, China, on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018. Alibaba on Sunday tore through last year's Singles Day sales record, racking up more than $30.8 billion in the 24-hour shopping event.Gross merchandise value (GMV), a figure that shows sales across the Chinese e-commerce giant's various shopping platforms, surpassed last year's $25.3 billion record at around 5:34 p.m. SIN/HK (4:34 a.m. ET) on Sunday, and kept marching higher through the rest of the day.In Chinese currency terms, GMV totaled 213.5 billion yuan, easily beating last year's figure of 168.2 billion yuan and representing a nearly 27 percent year-on-year rise. That was, however, smaller than the 39 percent year-on-year growth recorded in 2017.Alibaba's Singles Day GMV beat last year's figure in yuan terms earlier than it toppled the dollar record. The Chinese currency is weaker against the greenback from a year ago, which means more sales in yuan are required to get the same dollar amount. It was the 10th edition of the annual Singles Day event, which is also called the Double 11 shopping festival because it falls on Nov. 11. During the 24-hour period, Alibaba offered huge discounts across its e-commerce sites such as Tmall.Alibaba's Singles Day sales haul easily exceeded the spending by consumers during any single U.S. shopping holiday. The event got off to a strong start with sales hitting $1 billion in one minute and 25 seconds. Just over an hour in, and sales exceeded $10 billion, five minutes and 21 seconds faster than last year. The number of delivery orders surpassed a billion.Alibaba introduced new aspects into this year's Singles Day. Lazada, a Singapore-based e-commerce site that has operations across Southeast Asia and is majority-owned by Alibaba, hosted its own sales. And Ele.me, Alibaba's food delivery platform, provided delivery for select Starbucks stores across 11 Chinese cities. Starbucks struck a deal earlier this year with Alibaba to work together in China.'New retail focus'Alibaba hosted a gala featuring celebrities including Miranda Kerr and Mariah Carey which kicked off on Saturday and went through to the end of the 11:11 event. Company founder Jack Ma also made an appearance at the media event which marked the start of Singles Day, but he did not give a speech. The Chinese giant is putting a big focus this year on a strategy it calls "new retail," which aims to bring together the online parts of its business with the offline. For example, it has a chain of grocery stores called Hema which allow users to go in and shop, pay with their phone and walk out. The Starbucks deal is part of the new retail strategy."When we talk about new retail, we strongly believe that online commercial world and offline brick mortars are not separate worlds. And if you look at the customer base today, everyone is living in the internet. Everybody is the internet user. You have the same customer base. You must have the same commercial world. It's all about how to innovate online and offline to a whole digitalized commercial world," Zhang told CNBC.HeadwindsSingles Day could provide some relief to investors amid concerns that the U.S.-China trade war and stock market drops in the mainland have hit Chinese consumer appetite. Alibaba is facing a number of headwinds with shares down nearly 16 percent this year due to weakening investors sentiment towards Chinese technology companies because of the trade war. And the company recently cut its revenue guidance for the fiscal year.Ahead of Singles Day, Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba told CNBC in an exclusive interview that aired earlier this week, that the U.S.-China trade tensions could be an opportunity for the firm."Well, I would say nobody likes trade war and nobody likes the uncertainty of the economic condition. But what we always do is that to try to find opportunities in the tough time. If people have some pain points, this means some opportunities. How to help people in the tough time to get more business, not only in China but also in the global markets," Zhang told CNBC."For Alibaba, we always think about our mission, which is make it easy to do business anywhere. I think it's more relevant today in this condition," he added.Alibaba also pledged last week to help businesses sell $200 billion worth of goods to China in the next five year.

Alibaba announces Jack Ma succession plan: CEO Daniel Zhang to take over as chairman in a year
Justin Solomon | CNBCJack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group in Shanghai China on Dec. 5th, 2017.Alibaba on Monday said that chief executive officer Daniel Zhang will succeed Jack Ma as chairman of the board, starting September 10, 2019.Ma will continue as executive chairman at Alibaba over the next 12 months for a smooth transition of the chairmanship to Zhang, the company said in a statement. After that, he intends to stay on the Alibaba board of directors until the 2020 annual shareholders meeting. In a letter to Alibaba's customers and shareholders, Ma said the transition "demonstrates that Alibaba has stepped up to the next level of corporate governance from a company that relies on individuals, to one built on systems of organizational excellence and a culture of talent development.""Starting the process of passing the Alibaba torch to Daniel and his team is the right decision at the right time, because I know from working with them that they are ready, and I have complete confidence in our next generation of leaders," Ma wrote. He added that he plans to continue his role as the founding partner in the Alibaba Partnership, which is a group made up of 36 senior leaders entrusted with the company's mission, vision and values."I also want to return to education, which excites me with so much blessing because this is what I love to do," he said. The move to appoint Zhang as a successor to Ma was not at all surprising, Gil Luria, director of research at financial services firm D.A. Davidson & Co, told CNBC's "Squawk Box.""(Ma) stepped back five years ago to become chairman," Luria said, adding that Ma had left the stage for Zhang, Executive Vice Chairman Joe Tsai, Chief Financial Officer Maggie Wu and others to take over. "He's done, he's already worked on the succession for years. It seems to be going in a fairly orderly fashion."Luria also said not to expect too many changes as a result of the leadership succession."The communication to the outside world beyond the investment community may be a little different without Jack Ma. He's a very colorful, charismatic figure, and that aspect of communication may go away," he said. But the strategies put in place at the tech giant, including an online-to-offline new retail strategy, belong to Zhang, Luria added. "It's his company now and as chairman, (Zhang) would most likely continue those strategies."Ma, a former English teacher, co-founded Alibaba in 1999 and is considered one of China's richest men, with a net worth of $36.6 billion, according to Forbes. Alibaba, based out of Hangzhou, China, started as an e-commerce marketplace and expanded into other business areas, including cloud computing and digital payments through its affiliate Ant Financial. Ma stepped down as chief executive officer in 2013 to dedicate more time to philanthropy through the Jack Ma Foundation.Last week, a report by The New York Times said that the billionaire was retiring from the company he helped found, and that it would've made him the first founder among a generation of prominent Chinese internet entrepreneurs to step down from his company. On Saturday, the South China Morning Post, which is owned by Alibaba, quoted a spokesman saying the Times' report was factually inaccurate, and taken out of context.Read Jack Ma's full letter to Alibaba shareholders and customers below:Dear Alibaba customers, Aliren, and shareholders,Today, as we mark the 19th anniversary of Alibaba, I am excited to share some news with you:with the approval of our board of directors, one year from today on September 10, 2019 which also falls on Alibaba's 20th anniversary, Group CEO Daniel Zhang will succeed me as chairman of the board of Alibaba Group. While remaining as executive chairman in the next 12 months, I will work closely with Daniel to ensure a smooth and successful transition. Thereafter, I will stay on the Alibaba board of directors until our annual shareholders meeting in 2020.I have put a lot of thought and preparation into this succession plan for ten years. I am delighted to announce the plan today thanks to the support of the Alibaba Partnership and our board of directors. I also want to offer special thanks to all Alibaba colleagues and your families, because your trust, support and our joint enterprise over the past 19 years have prepared us for this day with confidence and strength. This transition demonstrates that Alibaba has stepped up to the next level of corporate governance from a company that relies on individuals, to one built on systems of organizational excellence and a culture of talent development. When Alibaba was founded in 1999, our goal was to build a company that could make China and the world proud and one that could cross three centuries to last 102 years. However, we all knew that no one could stay with the company for 102 years. A sustainable Alibaba would have to be built on sound governance, culture-centric philosophy, and consistency in developing talent. No company can rely solely on its founders. Of all people, I should know that. Because of physical limits on one's ability and energy, no one can shoulder the responsibilities of chairman and CEO forever. We asked ourselves this question 10 years ago – how could Alibaba achieve sustainable growth after Jack Ma leaves the company? We believed the only way to solve the problem of corporate leadership succession was to develop a system of governance based on a unique culture and mechanisms for developing consistent talent and successors. For the last 10 years, we kept working on these ingredients.Having been trained as a teacher, I feel extremely proud of what I have achieved. Teachers always want their students to exceed them, so the responsible thing to do for me and the company to do is to let younger, more talented people take over in leadership roles so that they inherit our mission "to make it easy to do business anywhere." Carrying out this mission in order to help small businesses, young people and women around the world is my passion. This is not only our intent from day one but I feel blessed to have this opportunity. To realize the dream behind this mission requires participation by a lot more people than just Jack Ma and persistent effort by generations of Aliren.Alibaba is amazing not because of our business or scale or accomplishments. The best thing about Alibaba is that we come together under a common mission and vision. Our partnership system, unique culture and talented team have laid a strong foundation for the legacy of our company. In fact, since I handed over the CEO's responsibilities in 2013, the company has run smoothly for five years on the back of these institutional ingredients. The partnership system we developed is a creative solution to good governance and sustainability, as it overcomes several challenges faced by companies of scale: continuous innovation, leadership succession, accountability and cultural continuity. Over the years, in iterating our management model, we have experimented with and improved on the right balance between systems and individuals. Simply relying on individuals or blindly following a system will not solve our problems. To achieve long-term sustainable growth, you need the right balance among system, people and culture. I have full confidence that our partnership system and efforts to safeguard our culture will in time win over the love and support from customers, employees and shareholders.Since the founding of the company in 1999, we have been of the view that Alibaba's future will need to depend on "droves of talent" to enable us to iterate on our management succession plans. After years of hard work, today's Alibaba has a world-class talent pool in quality and quantity. The teacher in me feels extremely proud of our team, our leadership and our unique mission-driven culture, as well as the fact that we continue to develop exceptional business leaders and professional talent like Daniel Zhang.Daniel has been with Alibaba Group for 11 years. Since he took over as CEO, he has demonstrated his superb talent, business acumen and determined leadership. Under his stewardship, Alibaba has seen consistent and sustainable growth for 13 consecutive quarters. His analytical mind is unparalleled, he holds dear our mission and vision, he embraces responsibility with passion, and he has the guts to innovate and test creative business models. Deservedly, China's business news media has named him the No.1 CEO in 2018. For these reasons, he and his team have won the trust and support of customers, employees and shareholders. Starting the process of passing the Alibaba torch to Daniel and his team is the right decision at the right time, because I know from working with them that they are ready, and I have complete confidence in our next generation of leaders. As for myself, I still have lots of dreams to pursue. Those who know me know that I do not like to sit idle. I plan on continuing my role as the founding partner in the Alibaba Partnership and contribute to the work of the partnership. I also want to return to education, which excites me with so much blessing because this is what I love to do. The world is big, and I am still young, so I want to try new things – because what if new dreams can be realized?!The one thing I can promise everyone is this: Alibaba was never about Jack Ma, but Jack Ma will forever belong to Alibaba.Jack MaSeptember 10, 2018

European Automakers to Add Alibaba Voice Assistant to Cars
Ahead of this week’s Beijing Motor Show, three European car manufacturers have said that they will add Alibaba’s smart voice assistant to smart devices compatible with their connected car apps.Daimler, Audi, and Volvo car owners in China will be able to use Alibaba’s Tmall Genie voice-controlled assistant to monitor fuel levels, mileage, and engine and battery status, as well as control car doors, windows, and air conditioning from home via voice command. The feature is expected to launch in the near future — Volvo plans to use the Tmall Genie service on its XC90, S90, and XC60 models; Daimler and Audi haven’t yet specified which will implement the voice assistant.Earlier this year at CES, Alibaba announced a partnership with Mediatek to develop its own smart mesh connectivity solution to support Bluetooth mesh networking. While that announcement was focused on connectivity, Alibaba had already been working with the fabless semiconductor company for its voice assistant, using Mediatek’s MT8516 application processor for audio and microphone processing. The MT8516 integrates a quad-core, 64-bit Arm Cortex-A35 MPCore operating at up to 1.3 GHz and features interfaces such as I2Sx2 (four channels), TDM (up to eight channels), and PDM inputs (two channels) for microphone voice input control and connected audio products. The automaker partnerships are with Alibaba’s A.I. Labs, its in-house research unit for developing artificial intelligence-powered consumer applications, as part of its IoT initiative. The lab is also working to integrate its AI platform into vehicle operating systems so users will be able to control Tmall Genie-compatible home appliances from their cars. Alibaba said that it would use A.I. Labs’ voiceprint technology to ensure that the devices can only execute commands when activated by the voice of authorized users.Daimler also plans to leverage geofencing technology — developed by Alibaba Cloud’s IoT division — to automatically turn on or off lighting, thermostats, and other home appliances when they drive past a designated area near their homes.Tmall Genie was launched in July 2017 and has sold over 2 million units in China to date. Cars seem to be the next frontier for this service. Market research firm Counterpoint Insights forecasts that more than 125 million connected passenger cars would be shipped between 2018 and 2022, with the market increasing 270%. The report pointed to fast-growing adoption in China as one of the key drivers.“Cars are an environment, alongside the home and the office, where individuals spend a significant amount of time, and which through connectivity can become an important part of life,” said Lijuan Chen, head of Alibaba A.I. Labs, in a press statement. “Identifying how to serve car users with our smart home assistant Tmall Genie is one of our top priorities.”

Alibaba Adds Embedded CPU Core Designer
China’s internet behemoth, Alibaba Group, announced on Friday the acquisition of C-Sky Microsystems, a designer of China’s home-grown 32-bit embedded CPU processing core. Alibaba did not disclose terms of the acquisition. The move underscores a growing trend among companies, such as Google, Amazon, and Alibaba, who are eager to swallow up chip companies with a goal to design chips that fit their businesses. As EE Times reported last year, even well before this acquisition was announced, C-Sky enjoyed a unique tie with Alibaba. As Xiaoning Qi, CEO of C-Sky, explained then, C-Sky was already the first chip company in the world to receive a sizable investment from Alibaba. C-Sky was founded in Hangzhou in 2001. Although Qi declined to disclose the amount provided by Alibaba’s Jack Ma, he revealed that he and his mentor, Prof. Xiaolang Yan, C-Sky’s founder and chairman, have lobbied Alibaba to acknowledge that hardware technology is critical to the future of the e-commerce giant. Reuters connected the Alibaba-C-Sky announcement with a seven-year U.S. government ban on selling chips and other components to Chinese telecom company ZTE. Current speculation has China, in the wake of the ZTE ban, coordinating with industry bodies, regulators, and China’s “big fund” to accelerate plans to make China’s IC industry self-sufficient. Perhaps so, but Alibaba’s deal with C-Sky might as well have been well underway regardless of the ZTE ban. C-Sky’s CEO, contacted by EE Times to shed more light on Alibaba’s acquisition, declined an interview. Alibaba is advising him not to talk until the deal is closed. C-Sky’s business To recap, C-Sky has been designing a 32-bit high-performance and low-power embedded CPU, then licensing the chip architecture. Since 2003, when it rolled out its first CPU core,CK510, C-Sky has been quietly developing a host of embedded cores, SoC platforms, software tools, and middleware. Last year, Qi told us that his company has picked up 70 licensees so far in China. Of course, the obvious question among semiconductor market observers in the West is whether the global embedded market might be already cornered by dominant CPU processing cores such as ARM and MIPS. And what about the rising tide behind RISC-V? Qi, at that time, told us: “China needs to work on the development of ‘core technologies,’ and we think our embedded CPU is one of them.” As for RISC-V, Qi called it “promising” and told us last year, “We are looking into it for our solutions for 64-bit CPU cores.” C-Sky is a platinum member of the RISC-V Foundation. Alibaba and C-Sky alignment C-Sky’s embedded CPU cores designed for the IoT market are closely aligned with Alibaba’s proprietary embedded OS, called Yun OS IoT. Having good visibility over both the CPU architecture and Alibaba’s software operating system is important, said Qi. Although Yun OS isn’t the only operating system that C-Sky supports, Qi believes that his team’s “deep collaboration” with Alibaba gives C-Sky the inside track in China’s IoT market, where the e-commerce behemoth dominates in data collection and analysis. While Alibaba is currently working with Intel Corp. for its server architecture to be used in data centers, C-Sky sees for itself a critical role in IoT edge devices connected to the cloud. C-Sky’s embedded CPU cores aren’t for baseband or apps processors in smartphones. “We’ve avoided that market,” said Qi. Instead, C-Sky is promoting its CPU cores for embedded and IoT applications. Its targets are systems for digital audio and video — including AI-based processing and recognition engines (for smart speakers like Amazon’s Echo), information security, network and communications, industrial control, and automotive electronics.

Alibaba IoT Platform Partners with NXP for Automotive
AliOS, the operating system for IoT solutions developed by China’s Alibaba Group, has entered into a partnership with NXP to install the AliOS system and NXP’s automotive infotainment solution in "millions of vehicles" in China by 2020. The collaboration will help build a smart cockpit enhanced by multi-screen display, artificial-intelligence-driven interaction and secure over-the-air (OTA) updates, according to the companies. Alibaba is said to be aiming to connect 10 billion devices by 2023on its IoT network, and it appears to be creating the ecosystem to develop this, with partnerships announced in recent months with STMicroelectronics, MediaTek and others. The partnership with NXP, which combines AliOS and NXP i.MX applications processors, will also explore the optimization of software and hardware design for next-generation auto e-cockpits, future car broadcasting systems and beyond. "Over the past three years, AliOS has been a pioneer in driving the digital transformation of cars and helping auto brands to enhance the overall user experience,” said Simon Hu, senior vice president of Alibaba Group and president of AliOS. He added that they will strive to make cars more intelligent to better connect with the digitized road infrastructure in cities, by creating a robust platform to spur innovation and reduce the costs associated with the mass production of smart vehicles. “We look forward to redefining the future of the automobile sector in collaboration with our ecosystem partners such as NXP,” Hu said. “Alibaba and NXP share the new vision that in-vehicle experiences and consumer services will be an essential differentiator for carmakers moving forward,” said Kurt Sievers, executive vice president and general manager of NXP automotive. “Alibaba has great momentum in the development, innovation and application of automotive operating systems. We believe the partnership will bring rich opportunities to the auto industry.” Validation of STMicroelectronics IoT sensors Earlier this month, STMicroelectronics announced the validation of its LSM6DSL 6-axis inertial sensor and LPS22HB pressure sensor for Alibaba's IoT ecosystem, enabling users to create complete IoT nodes and gateway solutions. Alibaba recently announced the release of AliOS Things v1.2, which includes a sensor-based component called uData. The ST sensors that have passed the AliOS validation have been integrated in uData and the two companies are cooperating on the development of IoT systems that aim to improve end-user experiences. The LSM6DSL is a system-in-package featuring a 3D digital accelerometer and a 3D digital gyroscope that operates at 0.65 mA in high-performance mode and enables always-on low-power features for an optimal motion experience for the consumer; it also features high robustness to mechanical shock. It supports main OS requirements, offering real, virtual and batch sensors with 4Kbyte for dynamic data batching. The LPS22HB is an ultra-compact piezo-resistive absolute pressure sensor that functions as a digital output barometer. Dust-free and water-resistant by design, the sensor enables high accuracy and low-power operation. It is available in full-mold package with silicon cap and six 20?m holes guaranteeing sensor moisture resistance, relative accuracy of pressure measurement 0.1 mbar, and very low power consumption (e.g. 12?A in Low-Noise mode). “The validation by Alibaba of ST’s LSM6DSL and LPS22HBsensors is an important achievement. Creating and connecting nodes quickly and securely is facilitated by the holistic platform of AliOS, which cuts time to market for users and allows them to create IoT systems in China quickly for applications in smartphones, smart watches, smart locks, smart parking and beyond. On top of this, Alibaba is collaborating closely with ST to integrate more products in the platform, offering compelling IoT solutions for customers,” said Collins Wu, marketing director, for ST's analog and MEMS Group in Greater China and South Asia. MediaTek IoT initiative in smart homes At CES earlier this year, Alibaba A.I. Labs announced a strategic collaboration with MediaTek in IoT initiatives including smart home protocols, customized IoT chips and AI smart hardware. The two parties also announced the first Smartmesh connectivity solution in China that supports the latest many-to-many Bluetooth mesh technology, in an effort to speed up the adoption of this technology in smart home settings. The partnership comes on the heels of the successful collaboration on Tmall Genie, the lab’s first voice-controlled smart assistant, for which MediaTek provided chip technology support. Alibaba A.I. Labs launched the smart home assistant in July last year, with an aim to provide brand new interaction experiences for Chinese consumers. More than 1 million Tmall Genie devices were sold in China during Alibaba’s Global Shopping Festival on November 11 last year.
